When the invitation arrived, it had a small cowboy boot on it. My husband said he thought it was a western-themed party. “A costume party! Let’s go all out!” I pleaded. My husband was new to the company, and this would be his first event outside of the office with his coworkers and boss. Even though I was six months pregnant with our first child, I just knew I could find us some matching outfits. I borrowed some overalls and shoved bandanas in our pockets.
I coaxed my reluctant husband out of the car assuring him that we looked “fun.” As we arrived in overalls and bandanas, we quickly realized that the other partygoers had on nice business casual attire and the only western wear to be seen was an occasional high-priced boot peeking out from under freshly pressed dress pants. My red-faced husband whispered, “Oh we don’t look like we are going to a rodeo . . . we look like the clowns that jump in the barrels at the rodeo.”
There was no way to sneak out. We had already entered and been seen. Seen wearing the wrong thing. You could tell people were embarrassed for us as they avoided making eye contact with the matching, pregnant, overall-wearing couple. The only bright side of the evening was that I had decided to leave off the black eye-pencil freckles that I thought would complete the look. This event happened twenty-four years ago, and I can still feel the uncomfortableness as I type.
Did you know that God tells us in His word what to wear to His party called life? He knows exactly what we need to be dressed in to not only keep from embarrassing ourselves but to be protected and successful in life.
Romans 13:14 tells us to clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 17:28 says, “For in Him we live and move and have our being.”
Ephesians 6:10-18 encourages us to put on the full armor of God that we may be able to stand against the devil’s schemes. Have you ever noticed that all those pieces of armor can be related back to Jesus? When we are in the armor, we are in Him and clothed in Him.
