A Day at the Fair

farriswheelSeek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33)

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened unto you. (Matthew 7:7)

Jesus promises us that when we seek Him and wait on Him, we will not only be rewarded, we will find Him! As Christians we are familiar with that deep down peace and contentment we sense when we seek Him in prayer and spend time in His word, yet the battle for our attention can be overwhelming. There are loads of distractions that grab at us and try to snatch our time and focus.

It’s just like a fair attendee whose greatest desire is to ride the Ferris wheel at the end of the midway but has a limited amount of tokens to spend. The carnies bark out, “Over here!” “Try your hand at popping the balloon!” “Come win a teddy bear for your lady!” We tightly grasp our tokens, trying to stay focused on making it to the goal . . . the Ferris wheel. Except in our case, we don’t have fair tokens and instead hold in our hands a set amount of time, effort, and affections. Our goal or Ferris wheel is to set aside focus and time with our Lord.

We hear the distracting voices shout, “Check Facebook again!” “You can read your Bible after the house is clean.” “Lighten up . . . you work hard all day . . . you’ll seek His heart tomorrow.” We don’t have to earn anything to be loved by Him. It is not about works, but we know that it will take an act of our will to focus our attention on Him and to spend time in His word. Hebrews 12:2 states, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

We only have so many tokens, so many hours, so many days. Let us stay focused on the prize.
