“Mommy, Mommy! I’m so scared in my room!” I heard these words and tried to swim my way up to consciousness. Through slits in my eyelids, I read the alarm clock that said 2:34 a.m. in yellow neon digits. Before me stood my four-year-old, clad in her footie flannel pajamas. Her brown eyes were as big as tea cup saucers.
In a state of half-consciousness, I scooped up her warm little body and laid her right next to me. It’s amazing how the maternal instinct doesn’t have to think and is always awake at a moment’s notice. I kissed the top of her head and enjoyed the smell of Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo. In a half-whisper I gently explained, “You know, baby, there is nothing to be afraid of. Jesus is always with you in your room. When you are scared, you can always talk to Him.” Her response brought a smile to my lips. She whispered back into my ear, “I did, and He said, ‘Go get your Mommy.'”
This reminds me of the story of the little girl who told her mom, “I love Jesus, but sometimes you just need someone with skin on.”
I am so grateful for the Holy Spirit and how the Lord promises us that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6). I am also very grateful that He gave us each other.
Let’s go out and be Jesus with skin on.
