He’s Calling Your Name

After Jesus died and was buried, Mary was looking at the empty tomb and was very distraught with the belief that someone had taken her Jesus’s body. Jesus Himself appears to her, and she doesn’t recognize who He is . . . UNTIL she turns towards Him and He calls her by her name.

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

(John 20:10-18)

Did you know that He is calling YOUR name today? At times it seems unbelievable—almost impossible—that the omniscient, all-knowing Being who keeps the planets in motion and marks off the measurements of the ocean shoreline, not only knows us but knows us in detail down to how many hairs we have on our heads. He knows our shortcomings and our daily wrestles with denying our flesh. He knows our inner thoughts and wants to scoop us up and tell us His inner thoughts.

We were all created with this God-shaped hole in our inner beings that only He can fill. I often try to fill mine with food, distractions of a movie, or busyness when really my restlessness is my inner being crying out for connection with Him. We can attend church and hear others talk about Him, read blogs or quotes on Instagram about Him, notice the bumper sticker on the car in front of us that declares His goodness, but when He turns around and faces us eye-to-eye and spirit-to-Spirit, that is when we truly recognize Him as ours and ourselves as His.

When He turns unexpectedly and says our name. When He gives us personal attention. When He invades our thoughts and makes us feel like we are the only one on the planet at that moment. When is the last time you felt that way? Felt like He was calling you to come away with Him for some personal one-on-one time with the Creator of the universe? We can go to church, listen to worship music, and talk about Him with our friends, but there is no replacing that personal intimate time—time alone in His presence and in His word. It’s that time when He calls us personally by name and reveals to us His intimate love and plans for us.

I can tell you that my husband is 6’1” and has green eyes, but that doesn’t mean that I have been on a date with Him this week or connected with his heart. I hear our Lord beckoning to His children, Come away with Me. When I choose to come away with Him, that’s when I feel like Mary in the garden and truly recognize My Jesus, the One who has walked with me intimately for years. Can’t you just picture Him making direct eye contact with you? Directly looking at you and calling your name?  Just like He called Peter out onto the water. He knows you, loves you, and longs to be with you. He wanted a personal relationship with you so much that He hung and died on a cross.  Let’s not miss out on this intimacy for which He paid such a high price.

  1. I have had the personal experience of having him look me directly in the eye and calling my name. The messages He spoke were, “Stay where you are and I will take care of you” and
“Nona, come upstairs I want to talk to you.” I went upstairs and communed with Him and was filled the Peace that surpasses understanding. He is a loving and Merciful God who is pure love.
