My first PEZ dispenser was a really big deal to me. I can remember my sweaty little palm grasping the rectangular plastic column and feeling the power of loading those bite-sized candies. The only downside to my PEZ experience was that from the grocery store check-out to my driveway, I had emptied and devoured not only all the candy in the dispenser, but also the refill candy packages as well.
The dispenser presented to me a tower of sugar that begged to be taken down to the bottom candy. I didn’t taste or even enjoy each candy. No, I had to consume it to get to the next one in the stack. Faster and faster, not at all savoring what I was eating. Oh sure, chalk it up to being eight years old and easily excited, but I’m much older now and find myself often with the same distracted fervor as that eight-year-old little girl. I devour the moments of my days, often focused on trying to get to tomorrow.
Wisdom begs us to consume and savor one PEZ at a time, one God-given breath at a time, one laugh, one daily chore.
What PEZ are you trying to get to? As husband, a new job, a baby?
Let’s be thankful and enjoy our PEZ…the PEZ called today.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. -Matthew 6:33
