One, two, three . . . SLIDE! Ever play that board game where your game piece is advanced more quickly because you hit a space on the board that propels you forward? Oh sure, the black dots on the dice you rolled declare the number four, but when you move your piece and count out the next four spaces, that fourth space has a special symbol that denotes the slide rule Read more
Ever have thoughts that you are not good enough? That you are not measuring up or performing as well as you should? The enemy comes and brings accusation, doubt, and confusion into our minds. His desire is for us to question who God says we are and to feel disqualified because of our pasts. Read more
Can you imagine buying a house that was constructed without windows? Not one of us would take out a mortgage on that. It wouldn’t pass for a house at all but possibly a very large closet. Living without windows would be isolating, dark, and eventually depressing. The line is short for those who would want to be cave dwellers. Most of us, within hours of waking up, want to pull back the curtains and let some sunshine into our morning routines. Read more
Last night as I flipped through channels, the Home Shopping Network caught my attention. I was surprised at how quickly I got into the Christmas spirit. As I listened to the hostess’s description of red and green plaid garland sprinkled with gold painted pine cones, I had to force myself to stay seated instead of running to my wallet to get my credit card number and expiration date. Those hosts can have me wanting spider vomit for my bedroom just by the way they string together their adjectives. Read more
One night at dinner when my older brother Rhett was about twelve, he casually mentioned, “I think I wanna be a doctor.” The entire family was eating fish sticks as we sat around our oval shaped kitchen table.
“You? I don’t think that would be a good idea,” my other brother Shane quipped back. “You are way too forgetful.” Read more
When the invitation arrived, it had a small cowboy boot on it. My husband said he thought it was a western-themed party. “A costume party! Let’s go all out!” I pleaded. My husband was new to the company, and this would be his first event outside of the office with his coworkers and boss. Even though I was six months pregnant with our first child, I just knew I could find us some matching outfits. I borrowed some overalls and shoved bandanas in our pockets.

“Hey Siri, what is the definition of extravagant?” I was expecting more of a positive answer, but the definition she provided me was, “lacking restraint in spending money or using resources.” She followed that with “exceeding what is reasonable or appropriate.” What piqued my interest into defining extravagant? Well, when I was pondering what to write about this week, what kept coming to my heart was the extravagant nature of God. Read more
“a thousand-mile journey,” but that seems a little too intense for me. Who says it has to be that long? Maybe because I am typing this on a Monday morning and don’t need that much pressure.) Read more
Lies, lies, and more lies he tries to feed us. Our enemy comes to rob, kill, and destroy ( John 10:10). He is a like a roaring lion looking for whom he can devour (1 Peter 5:8). And yet when we know and remember who we are in Christ, the enemy’s lies are easily deflated. Read more
